Zemeckis and Dean Cundey built a visual approach to time travel around color contrast. 1985 is warm and slightly faded, 1955 is oversaturated with the optimism of the era, 2015 is all clean silver and neon. The DeLorean's stainless steel chassis reflects whatever time period it inhabits. The trilogy's color is nostalgic even in its own present, always aware that every moment will eventually become the past.
