Halloween's color vocabulary is built around the suburban October night. Carpenter's 1978 original used the darkness and porch-light warmth of Illinois autumn to make a familiar landscape strange. The orange and black of the season bleeds into every sequel. Rob Zombie's reboots brought a grimier, more desaturated look that traded suburban dread for rural poverty. The franchise's best films understand that Halloween's colors are the colors of safety about to end.
