Peter Jackson and cinematographer Andrew Lesnie built Middle-earth around a deliberate color morality. The Shire's greens and golds represent safety and plenty. Rivendell's silver-blue calm suggests ancient wisdom. Mordor's volcanic reds and ashen greys make evil visible from the horizon. This color architecture was so influential that nearly every fantasy film since has borrowed from it, often without understanding why it worked.
