The Mission: Impossible series has used its changing directors to shift visual registers with each installment. Brian De Palma's original brought a cool, saturated spy-film palette. J.J. Abrams added lens flare and kinetic handheld energy. Christopher McQuarrie's later films settled into a grittier, more practical aesthetic with the cool blues and greys of European locations.
