The original Planet of the Apes series used the California landscape to suggest an alien world, relying on color to signal temporal dislocation: the bleached orange of the desert, the cold blue of the sea, the ochre of the Forbidden Zone. The modern Caesar trilogy used a muted, naturalistic palette that gave its digital apes an unexpected emotional weight, photographing them as if they belonged to the world rather than existed apart from it.
