Wes Craven's Scream series uses the color of suburban normalcy as its primary horror tool. The familiar warm interiors of middle-class American homes, the porch lights and kitchen lights of a safe neighborhood, all rendered in the same palette as the genre films being referenced and deconstructed. When violence arrives, it arrives in red against beige, which is somehow more disturbing than any amount of gothic atmosphere.
